Sacha Davidoff's Preview from the Geneva Auctions - PART IICHRISTIE'S GENEVA AUCTIONFollowing my writeup on the Phillips watch auctions last week, my buddy (Roy) i took a glance at Christie's upcoming auction catalog and had the pleasure of viewing the replica watches with Thomas Perrazi in Geneva. Thomas as well as the team have centered on vintage versus modern in recent auctions after a global trend from collectors. Around the team, we all had the pleasure of seeing Marie Stauffer at Christie's as she's just moved over from Sotheby's (part of a pretty common sport of musical chairs among auction houses). Along with Sabine, Marcello and Richard, the Christie's Geneva watch department team is solid and has now put together a terrific catalog which has a large selection of brands and models. Using a side note, we learned about the brand new Christie's watch department policy that lots estimated under 10'000 Swiss Francs are automatically without reserve adjusted 2016. Just in case anyone wondered why hundreds of lots are in red.RARE WATCHES INCLUDING IMPORTANT PRIVATE COLLECTIONSThe Christie's watch auction, which will take put on Monday May 16th in Geneva, includes 276 lots. It is an ideal size for the catalog simply because it keeps the balance between your high-end 'record setters' plus the more democratic pieces that any of us could imagine on the wrists. Outside the 276 lots, montblanc refills watches you will discover 70 Rolexes, 47 Patek Philippe and 25 Omegas, and this means the opposite 50 % of the catalog offers variety. Variety is wonderful!Smaller dedicated sections for brands like Piaget, Heuer, Longines, Breguet and Omega Speedmasters are neatly organized and produce browsing a pleasure. In the catalog, there are also two major private collections mentioned previously from the title in the auction. One is Breguet collection including 6 important pieces from the local private collector and the other can be a Rolex sports model & Patek Philippe collection. Also, we usually don't focus on pocket replica watches, one Breguet pocket watch, which coincidentally just isn't portion of the private collection lots, but alternatively excellent timing within the seller's part, stood out to us as particularly stunning officine panerai luminor gmt watches : Lot 121, an 'osmior' case art deco jumping hour pocket watch which has a rich provenance. Osmior is usually a term with an antique gold alloy containing osmium and which shares a similar aesthetic to platinum.Below are some on the interesting wristreplica watches we enjoyed and chosen to share:LOT #42 Rolex 5512 Explorer Dial, 1962As with all of brands using radium dials inside 1950's, the AEC (Atom Energy Comission) began imposing norms for acceptable radiation levels during the early 1960's. In the transition from radium to tritium, in 1962, Rolex dials' luminous material was adapted with lower radiation together an 'exclamation mark' cheap summer dresses lume plot to signal this change. Afterwards, dials with even lower radiation levels only using tritium were marked using an underline to signal the absence of radium in 1963-1964. Then, dials with T stamped on them replaced that old SWISS only dials entirely with out longer needed the underline. As far as a pointy crown guard 5512 with an Explorer dial is definitely uncommon, the exclamation mark indication causes it to become way more. Could there are numerous issues with this watch, however it has been through service a couple of times whilst still being looks ideal for wear and tear.Estimate CHF 75,000 - 120,000 LOT #91 Rolex 6543 Milgauss, 1955We are most accustomed to the 6541 Milgauss reference from the 50's, however, this rare 6543 reference incorporates a different case construction with an integrated anti-magnetic caseback compared to the separate soft metal cover located in the 6541. Sadly, no lightning hand about this reference either. Having only seen a few of these during our time here on this planet, that it was a good surprise to discover one in this auction. Again, we could speculate about the information the bezel and also the caseback, etc., but it comes with a Rolex service invoice so we as if it.Estimate CHF 80,000 - 140,000 LOT #131Breguet Triple Date Moonphase, 1952It is a good idea that we have not had one of these on my wrist because, good records, only an estimated 5 were ever produced. The trouble is superb, the triple matching number (No 1039) around the dial, case and movement is amazing above all, it's really a stunning watch for the wrist. Thinking about the rarity of Breguet complicated wristreplica watches versus Patek, Vacheron and AP, we find this to get a fascinating and engaging vintage wristwatch.Estimate CHF 15,000 - 25,000 LOT #171Patek Philippe 530 signed Astrua Torino, 1938There is really a large amount of chatter about this watch especially stirred within the debate about the among redone and restored. So, here's the sale: You will find 10 known Patek Phillipe 530 chronographs in steel. The sphere dial version, which curiously has .5mm larger case at 36.5mm, compensates only 3 of these known examples. Sadly, the three, including the one in this sale also have some work completed to their dials. The first, that had been last seen at Sotheby's during the past year had a dial entirely restored by Patek. In November 2014, in the Patek 175 sale, Christie's auctioned one time that has a redone dial that's even also damaged. The existing example may be the only known metal 530 sector dial that has a retailer signature (double signed) Astrua Torino, an Italian retailer and its even the earliest from the three often proves to be produced. Absolutely suit, then, if we every other watch expert continue to say "condition, condition, condition" why do these rare pieces seem to be exempt? They're not. Automobile original, pristine and untouched 530 in steel with sector dial surfaces (we presume there are several more out there somewhere) it might likely be worth considerably more.Estimate CHF 500,000 - 800,000 LOT #203Patek Philippe 3574 Blue Dial, 1974I imagine you didn't expect this to get a picks, but they can it's the overlooked watch which might be by far the most charming. This stainless-steel hand-wound Patek might well be unique having its blue dial with 'waffle' engraved hour markers and hand-engraved hands. They are saying 'possibly unique' as it is on your own proven to date with this particular configuration, but maybe one more may come up over the next blue moon. The watch is accompanied by original papers from Japan which an excellent package for an interesting and rare wristwatch using a relatively fair estimate.Estimate CHF 5,000 - 8,000 LOT #222Longines 5415 Two Tone Dial 13ZN, 1948A nice 37.5mm steel Longines 13ZN flyback chronograph has started to become harder to locate when compared to a would think. Even if this case includes a compressor snap back plus the screw down version might be more preferred, the steel case, good diameter , great condition beautiful movement are common here. Taking into consideration the interval plus the quality, it's no surprise why these Longines chronographs continually feel the roof. Competition among buyers for vintage steel chronographs is becoming fierce, fake watches especially Longines.Estimate CHF 20,000 - 30,000 LOT #233Omega Speedmaster Apollo-Soyuz, 1976We did good to hold our promise never to discuss Speedmasters, but promises are supposed to be broken. The historic and successful docking from the Apollo & Soyuz spacecrafts in 1975 marked eliminate the area Race between rival nations. 12 months later, in 1976, Omega released a commemorative special edition because of this event with the Italian market. This has been the primary stainless steel numbered edition released by Omega plus the just one ever made that will not mention Speedmaster within the dial. This exclusive edition includes a special commemorative case back, unique wider 5.5mm pushers (as an alternative to 5mm usually) with an Omega 'Oyster' style bracelet reference 1168/633. Overall, a good deal interesting details get this an awesome collectible! It's really a special and rare watch and so, only a few come up on the market, particularly original condition and quiet some collectors are in search of the irreplaceable 5.5mm pushers. The caseback was polished and small group was hard to see, which is why it is not mentioned inside catalog. My buddy and that i investigated with your kit of gadgets and both agreed it really is number 103.Estimate CHF 20,000 - 30,000 A big Thanks to Sacha Davidoff for contributing his the thing it the upcoming Geneva auctions this month. We used his name from the title of his article (he didn't make it happen himself) to produce his mom all the more proud (she were not impressed with the credits when i was in a smaller font in the last article).
